Man dies after being shot by North Las Vegas police

A North Las Vegas police officer shot and killed a man Friday after he pulled out a replica gun while being chased, according to the department.

Police tried to stop the man, who was riding a moped, at 1:32 a.m. on West Ann Road near the intersection at Camino al Norte. He didn’t pull over and after a “slow-speed pursuit,” the man left his moped in a the front yard of a house in the 700 block of Rio Royal Way.

That started a foot chase that led to the 6000 block of Revere Street, about a mile from where police had attempted the traffic stop.

The man turned around to confront officers and pulled out a pellet gun that resembled a black semi-automatic weapon, police said.

Police said there were multiple officers involved, but only one fired, striking the man multiple times, police said.

The man, who suffered critical wounds, died at University Medical Center. His identity was not immediately available.

A bag that belonged to the man was recovered, and police said it carried a second replica gun.

The officer who shot the man, police said, is a 29-year-old, six-year veteran with North Las Vegas police. He is on routine paid leave pending completion of the investigation.
