Man killed in Saturday officer-involved shooting identified

A man shot and killed by a Metro officer in a North Las Vegas foot chase on Saturday morning was identified by the Clark County coroner's office.

James Marcus Brown, 25, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, the coroner's office said Sunday. His city of residence was not immediately available.

Metro was called at 3:17 a.m. about a theft at the Siegel Slots and Suites, located at 5011 E. Craig Rd., near the Nellis Boulevard intersection, according to dispatch logs.

Witness descriptions led police to pull over a car with three people in it on East Cheyenne Avenue, on the Interstate 15 overpass, a short time later, said Metro Capt. Matt McCarthy.

Two people in the car were arrested without incident, but Brown, who Metro said was armed, ran into a desert lot.

An officer chased Brown and tried to use a stun gun on him when he didn't follow several orders to drop the weapon, McCarthy said. The stun gun was "ineffective."

The officer, "fearing for his life," fired multiple rounds from his service weapon when Brown turned toward the officer with the gun still in his hand, police said. The chase ended in the intersection of Losee Road and East Sharp Circle.

Brown was declared dead at University Medical Center, McCarthy said. Further details on Brown were not immediately available on Sunday.

Clark County booking logs show that 32-year-old Byron Leroy Anderson was arrested under the same event number and is facing a larceny from a person charge and one count of conspiracy to larceny. A search for his name in Clark County jails database yielded no results Sunday afternoon. It wasn't clear who else was detained.

Per its policy, Metro will release the name of the officer who shot Brown about 48 hours after the shooting. Metro will release more information on the case 24 hours after that.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call Metro's Force Investigation Section at 702-828-8452.
