Manpower of Southern Nevada president dies

Manpower of Southern Nevada President Andrew Scott Katz, 54, died Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Katz was born Jan. 9, 1962, in Long Island, N.Y. His family moved to the Las Vegas Valley when he was a year old, and he became a fan of all the town has to offer, friends and family said.

Katz attended Valley High School and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and graduated from the Lee Business School in 1983. He was a well-known Rebels fan, his longtime friend and Manpower Vice President Jeff Parker said.

As the president and face of Manpower of Southern Nevada, Katz was a great businessman, Parker said. He made sure to get to know his employees, many of whom have worked for him for 12 to 15 years, Parker said.

Katz was always smiling, had a positive attitude, was willing to help in any situation and had an incredible laugh, Parker added.

Mel Katz shared that his brother's last weekend was the "best weekend" as he celebrated the 35th anniversary of his fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, with his frat brothers as they watched the Rebels win in overtime against their fierce in-state rival, the University of Nevada, Reno.

Among Katz's good friends are Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and her husband, former Mayor Oscar Goodman, and former U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.

"The loss, for anybody who ever met Andy, is insurmountable," said Carolyn Goodman, adding that he touched those who worked with him and he worked with great integrity. "This is a great loss."

Berkley said, "This community is a better place to live because Andy Katz lived and breathed 54 years with us." She credited Katz with providing thousands of Nevadans with jobs through his company.

Katz is survived by his mother, Beatrice Katz, and brother Mel.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Temple Beth Sholom.

The family has started the Andy Katz Memorial Scholarship Fund at UNLV.
