Men pulled from Venetian canal released from hospital

Two men who were pulled from an outdoor canal last week at The Venetian are out of the hospital, according to a University Medical Center spokeswoman.

Metro, Clark County firefighters and Medic West paramedics were called to The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. S., about 7:45 a.m. August 24 after two men tried to swim across the casino's outdoor canal.

Casino security had escorted the men from the property for trespassing earlier that day, Venetian spokesman Ron Reese said Monday. Later they were spotted in the water on surveillance cameras. It wasn't their first interaction with Venetian staff.

"They were known to our security," Reese said.

The men, whose ages were not immediately available, were pulled from the water and taken to UMC in critical condition, the fire department said the day of the rescue.

Both men had been discharged from the hospital by Monday afternoon, UMC spokeswoman Erica Nansen said.

The casino's outdoor "main lagoon" — which is 11 to 12 feet deep and sits between Las Vegas Boulevard and the casino's front entrance — is the path for outdoor gondola rides. Those rides don't start until 10 a.m., so they weren't in operation at the time of the rescue.
