Metro makes “Deflategate” video to curb drunk driving

Las Vegas police jumped on the “Deflategate” bandwagon Thursday to bring a little humor to a very serious topic.

Cashing in on recent controversy about deflated footballs in the AFC Championship Game, Metro made a short video to promote “Joining Forces,” a multi-agency crackdown on drunk driving in Southern Nevada for Super Bowl Weekend.

“Don’t let your fun be deflated by a bad decision,” Lt. Leonard Marshall says in the video that was posted to YouTube.

Metro and other agencies are beefing up staff and are planning a sobriety checkpoint on Sunday at the intersection of Blue Diamond Road and South Decatur Boulevard. The checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“We’re always looking to make our roads safer, and Super Bowl Sunday is a great time to do that,” Metro spokeswoman officer Laura Meltzer said. “Anything to take impaired drivers off the road.”

Nevada Highway Patrol, Boulder City police and sheriff’s deputies from Lincoln and Nye counties also are pitching in. “Joining Forces” is a $1.5 million federally funded campaign focused on reducing impaired driving, speeding and cell phone usage while enforcing seat belt usage and pedestrian safety laws. The grant pays for officers to work overtime.
