Police: Man arrested after shooting at Nye County deputy, fleeing

A man was arrested Sunday morning after he shot at a Nye County Sheriff's Office deputy and then sped off in his truck during an attempted traffic stop — all while drunk, the sheriff's office said Monday.

A deputy initially saw Jose Ricardo Perez-Gomez recklessly driving his white truck just before 9:30 a.m., swerving into a ditch at one point on State Route 373, near mile marker 5, a release said.

When the deputy tried to pull him over, Perez-Gomez sped up in an effort to get away. About 100 yards from the attempted traffic stop, Perez-Gomez then held a semi-automatic handgun out his window and fired a single round toward the deputy.

Perez-Gomez then continued north, speeding, and later parked behind the Amargosa Dairy. But once he saw the deputy approaching again, Perez-Gomez took off once more, the release said.

He ultimately parked behind a home on G Ranch Road, got out of his truck and started walking. That's when deputies found him, and he admitted to driving the truck. He also admitted to having a host of weapons in his home and a loaded shotgun in his vehicle, all of which police found.

Perez-Gomez is an "undocumented worker," according to the release, which also noted the man smelled strongly of alcohol at the time of his arrest, the report said.

He was taken into custody and booked at the Nye County Detention Center on seven charges: possession of a firearm by a prohibited person; possession of a firearm under the influence; driving under the influence; assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer; discharge firearm from a vehicle; discharge firearm on public highway; and felony eluding, the release said.
