Rifle-wielding man shot, killed by NHP identified

The rifle-wielding man who was shot and killed by a Nevada Highway Patrol officer early Saturday morning was identified Sunday by the Clark County coroner’s office.

John T. Wilson, III, 22, of North Las Vegas, was shot and killed about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when NHP responded to reports of a man walking northbound on Interstate 15 near the Strip, carrying a “high-powered rifle,” said NHP Trooper Chelsea Webster.

It was unclear whether the man had fired any shots from the rifle when officers encountered the man just south of Sahara Avenue, NHP said Saturday.

The I-15 was shut down for about seven hours in both directions between Sahara and Spring Mountain Road.

Webster said at least one trooper was placed on administrative leave, but no further details were available.

Las Vegas police are investigating the shooting.
