‘Sunday in Hell’ described in book about Pearl Harbor attack

In "Sunday in Hell: Pearl Harbor Minute by Minute," Las Vegas author Bill McWilliams documents the events before, during and after the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on U.S. ships and military installations at Oahu, Territory of Hawaii.

Based on eyewitness accounts, diary entries and military records, it tells a number of stories ranging from the disastrous air raid that launched the United States into World War II to the courtship of Mary Joleen "Joey" Springer by Robert Lee "Bob" Border, a Naval Academy ensign stationed on board the USS Tennessee.

The couple married months before the attack and later lived in Las Vegas, where Bob retired as a Navy commander and World War II dive-bomber pilot.

Released first on Nov. 11 as a digital book by New York City publisher ereads.com, the electronic version of the book is carried by Amazon (for Kindle) and Barnes and Noble (for Nook).

On Nov. 20 the print, paperback version was released on Amazon, followed nine days later with an electronic version for iPads at Apple's website.

The book can be ordered from these outlets and previewed at www.west-point.org/class/usma1955/ D/M/PHP.htm.

Another book by McWilliams, "A Return to Glory: The Untold Story of Honor, Dishonor, and Triumph at the United States Military Academy," was turned into a made-for-TV movie, "Code Breakers," that aired on ESPN in 2005.
