Teen hospitalized, 3 dogs saved after central Las Vegas fire

A teen was hospitalized with minor burns after escaping a fire within a central valley home Thursday morning.
Las Vegas firefighters responded about 11 a.m. to the 6236 Fargo Ave. house, near Washington Avenue and Jones Boulevard, department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. Outside, they met the teen who had escaped.
The teen said he was sleeping when the fire started, and woke up to see the couch in the two-story home’s living room engulfed in flames. He ran outside, but at some point was burned.
Firefighters treated him at the scene and then took him to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. No one else was home at the time, but the fire left four adults and three teens displaced.
Four dogs and one cat were also in the home during the blaze. Firefighters rescued three dogs, but found one dead inside later. The cat wasn’t located, but “it is speculated it left the scene during the fire, which is normal for cats,” Szymanski said.
Though crews quickly extinguished the heavy flames coming from the home, the fire left the living room gutted and caused heat and smoke damage throughout the home.
Damages are estimated at about $75,000, and the cause is still under investigation.
