Tuesday fire damages Peccole Ranch home

A fire late Tuesday afternoon caused moderate damage to a house in Peccole Ranch, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to a home near Red Hills Road and South Fort Apache Road around 4 p.m. after neighbors reported smoke coming from the home. Responding personnel quickly put out the fire. They saw a large dog was inside the house, but no one was home at the time. The dog was not injured.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but firefighters believe it started near the front entrance of the home. Improperly discarded smoking material was found on the ground, as well as mulch in the landscaping. Fire officials believe the fire came from the bottom of a column and worked its way up. The wooden column is hollow and acted like a chimney, spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

One person has been displaced. Damages were estimated at $40,000.
