Two identified in Sunday Vegas police chase, shooting

What began as a shooting at an apartment complex in the northeast valley Sunday morning led two cousins on a pursuit with Las Vegas police that ended in an officer-involved shooting.

It started about 10 a.m., when police said Kevin Lay Jr., 23, and DeAnthony Brown, 24, showed up at an apartment complex at the 4800 block of Cleopatra Avenue, where a man was shot.

The wounded man was treated at University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A witness saw Brown and Lay in a red Ford Mustang and flagged down a patrol car, police said.

When police tried stopping the Mustang near Alexander Road and Lamb Boulevard, Brown, who was driving, took off and the police chased him.

After the Mustang nearly hit a wall near the Timberlake Drive and Trout Lake Avenue intersection, an officer conducted a Pursuit Intervention Technique. The maneuver involves a police car hitting the back of the vehicle it’s chasing and spining it out of control to stop it, police said.

Brown and Lay then ran in different directions. Lay ran into a house in the 3800 block of Clear Lake Court and refused to come out, but eventually turned himself in to Metro “a short time later,” police said. The family in the house escaped unharmed.

As he was running from two officers, Brown took out a weapon and turned toward them. He was shot and wounded by a Metro sergeant.

Lay, who goes by “Lil Kev,” and Brown, who goes by “Chub,” were booked at the Clark County Detention Center on Sunday. Brown was booked in absentia while being treated at UMC for wounds police said were not life-threatening.

Brown served time for two gun-related felonies in 2009, records show.

The two men face charges including two counts each of attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon and running away from police.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning, records show.
