Two men dead from flu in Clark County

Two Clark County men have died from the flu so far this season, the Southern Nevada Health District announced Thursday — a reminder to wash hands, cover coughs and "get your flu shot," district spokeswoman Stephanie Bethel said.

The men were both older than 60, she said, and together they marked the county's first flu-related deaths since Oct. 1, the beginning of the six-month season that ends each year on May 31.

During last year's season, the county saw 26 deaths and 318 hospitalizations out of 583 total cases.

Bethel said there are several strains to look out for, but "any strain is bad, especially if you are at risk." Pregnant women, children younger than 5 and adults older than 65 fall under the at-risk category, she said.

It's also recommended that anyone older than 6 months get a flu vaccination, the district said in its announcement. There is no flu-shot shortage, and they are available at many valley locations.
