Vehicle trapped under semitrailer near Las Vegas airport

Updated April 25, 2017 - 11:44 pm

The driver of a sedan was hospitalized with “extremely critical injuries” Tuesday after becoming trapped under a semitrailer near McCarran International Airport.

Metropolitan Police Department officers were called about 3:40 p.m. to the area of Sunset Road and Escondido Street, just south of the airport, for reports of a critical-injury collision involving a sedan trapped under a semitrailer.

A Metro release later said the semi was making a left turn from Escondido onto Sunset when it was hit by a 1997 Honda Accord “exceeding the speed limit.”

Arriving officers found the 21-year-old driver of the sedan unresponsive, Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

The driver was taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit in “extremely critical condition,” and remained in critical condition as of Tuesday night.

The 46-year-old semi driver remained on the scene and did not appear impaired.

The intersection was closed in both directions as detectives investigated and crews worked to clear the scene. It was expected to reopen Tuesday night.
