Warranty questions puzzle some customers of closed Goodyear stores

About a month ago, Joseph Jenkins of North Las Vegas thought his $75 warranty for his four tires purchased a year ago at a Bruce Scher's Goodyear store in North Las Vegas would come in handy because the tires kept going flat.

But then the 13 Bruce Scher's Goodyear stores in the Las Vegas area closed suddenly Dec. 18, and Jenkins said Scher's Goodyear and tire manufacturer officials told him he was out of luck with his warranty.

"What are customers supposed to do?" Jenkins asked.

Several former Scher's customers who bought warranties in the Las Vegas area contacted the Review-Journal to find out the fate of their warranties after the Goodyear shops closed without notice. The Southern California chain closed the 13 Las Vegas area stores because of the death of the namesake of the business, Bruce Scher, in early December.

Contacted by the Review-Journal, Rich Warburton, company vice president in Riverside, Calif., issued this statement:

"Goodyear has a nationwide warranty on their tires. Any Goodyear retailer can warranty a Goodyear tire that was purchased from us. There are several retailers in Las Vegas such as Pep Boys, Sears, and Discount Tire that can handle the immediate tire warranties. Our dealership participated in Goodyear's 'Tire & Service Network' which provided a nationwide warranty to our customers on the service repairs that we performed. Since Goodyear currently does not have any stores in Las Vegas, it's my understanding that Goodyear is working with other repair shops in Las Vegas to assist with the automotive service warranties."

Warburton said he is also working on getting a new dealer for the 13 Bruce Scher's Goodyear locations in Southern Nevada who would handle all the warranties.
