Woman killed in Sunday morning fire ID’d

The woman who died after an apartment fire Sunday has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

Taneshia Smith, a 28-year-old Las Vegas resident, was found unresponsive in a bathtub by an apartment complex maintenance worker who was assisting firefighters, the Clark County Fire Department said in a release Monday.

When firefighters arrived at the second-floor unit inside the Olive Grove Apartments, 4450 Karen Ave., Sunday morning, they found a fire in the kitchen area that was almost extinguished by a broken water line in the attic space above. The apartment was filled with smoke, and during a search, firefighters did not locate anyone in the fire area, the release said.

Firefighters put out what was left of the fire and cleared the smoke. They then sought help from an apartment maintenance staff to secure the water leak. A worker helping with the leak discovered an unresponsive adult female in the bathtub “and quickly called out to the on scene firefighters who immediately began treating her,” the release said.

The woman was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where attempts to resuscitate her failed.

The coroner’s office is investigating and is expected to have information on the cause of death in six to eight weeks.
