Time capsule captures Nevada’s 150th year
CARSON CITY - Nevada state officials deposited numerous items into a time capsule on Monday, which will be buried on the Capitol grounds for opening at the state’s bicentennial in 2064.
Commemorative medallions, photos of Nevada’s just concluded sesquicentennial celebration and other items will be part of the collection of what will be 50-year-old artifacts at the next major statehood event.
Gov. Brian Sandoval put in a letter he wrote to the governor of Nevada in 2064. Sandoval said in the letter that Nevadans will have the same sense of pride five decades from now that was seen in residents at this year’s celebration.
A second capsule containing many of the same items will be buried in a ceremony in Southern Nevada in January at a location yet to be determined.
Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, who served as chairman of the NV150 Commission that organized and coordinated the many sesquicentennial events, said allowing the capsule to be opened in 50 years will give some of those present at this year’s celebrations a chance to witness the event at the state’s bicentennial.
The state’s time capsule from the 1964 centennial cannot be opened until 2064, he said.
“It’s been an amazing year,” Sandoval said. “We had over 500 events over a year period and everybody got to be a part of this.”
