Roads reopened to Mount Charleston

State Routes 157 and 158 to Mount Charleston are open after they were closed for nearly an hour Thursday afternoon due to overcrowding.

Too many people were up past the Route 158 turn-off and officials were concerned about emergency personnel access should an emergency occur, according to Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Jason Buratczuk.

The highways were closed starting just after noon Thursday, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Twitter.

People were allowed down the mountain during that hour, but access up the mountain was restricted until the roads reopened again about 1:15 p.m., the department tweeted.

Traffic on State Route 156 to Lee Canyon was not affected.
