Hazmat crews respond to calls of possible nitrogen leak at Criss Angel Theater inside Luxor

The Clark County Fire Department responded Monday morning with the Las Vegas Fire Department’s hazardous materials team to calls of a possible nitrogen leak outside the Criss Angel Theater at the Luxor on the Strip.

Alarms alerted Luxor security to the area outside the building just before 5 a.m. where a 5,000-gallon tank of liquid nitrogen, with no apparent compromise or leaks, was located, according to the Clark County Fire Department. The area had been evacuated and secured prior to the department’s arrival.

Vehicle traffic was stopped in all directions as crews investigated the tank and its associated fixtures, according to Deputy Fire Chief Jon Klassen.

The investigation determined that alarms were triggered because filters within the system needed to be replaced, he said.

“Liquid nitrogen is typically used as a refrigerant and can be found on most large properties as a component of cold storage systems for food and other perishable items,” according to a statement released by Klassen early Monday.

The Luxor tank is maintained by a private company, according to the statement, and a technician was contacted and was headed to the scene.
