Excessive heat warning begins this weekend in Las Vegas Valley
As temperatures rise across the Las Vegas Valley the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning running from Sunday to Wednesday night.
Friday’s high stayed relatively low at 99 degrees, but the valley will see triple-digit highs again starting with 102 degrees on Saturday, meteorologist Chad Shafer said.
The excessive heat warning goes into effect Sunday with an expected high of 107 degrees. Highs will start approaching record temperatures on Monday, with a forecasted high of 113 degrees. The record for that date is 114 degrees, Shafer said.
Tuesday is expected to break the previous 111 degree record with a high of 114. The heat advisory is expected to end Wednesday night after a daytime high of 110 degrees though it is possible the advisory could extend past Wednesday, Shafer said.
Starting Sunday, overnight temperatures will be higher than average, with lows in the upper 80s and up to 90 degrees through the middle of the week. Higher-than-normal overnight lows are almost as dangerous as high daytime temperatures, especially for those who have no way to escape the heat, the weather service said.
During an excessive heat warning the weather service advises residents to stay inside, drink plenty of water and avoid long, strenuous activity in the sun.
