Excessive heat warning continues; cooling stations available
August 17, 2015 - 7:45 pm
Monday was hot for Las Vegas, but it wasn't a record-breaking day.
The valley was just a degree shy at 110 of its 1939 record-high of 111 degrees for Aug. 17, the National Weather Service said.
Tuesday's weather is expected to be similar with another high of 110. It could get breezy, but it won't provide any noticeable relief, meteorologist Justin Pullin said.
An excessive heat warning was issued Sunday and is set to expire Wednesday night, the weather service said.
Things probably won't improve until Thursday, when a system will brush right through the valley and cool temperatures down to its normal 102-degree weather for this time of year, Pullin said.
Other than avoiding strenuous work outdoors, the weather service recommends drinking water every 15 to 20 minutes, to avoid alcohol and caffeine, to wear light clothes, to eat light meals, and to be alert for signs of heat illnesses.
Clark County also has announced an extension for daytime cooling stations to offer relief for those who have no other place to go. They should stay open at least until Wednesday, the county said said. Some can accommodate pets.
