Heat settles into Las Vegas Valley with triple-digit temps

After temperatures broke into the triple digits Wednesday for the first time this year, Thursday was even hotter for Las Vegas. And Friday looks to be even hotter still.

Temperatures climbed to 106 degrees Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Friday is likely to be even hotter, with a high of 107 expected.

As temperatures continue to climb through the weekend, an excessive heat warning has been issued for the Las Vegas valley including Lake Mead, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday and running through 8 p.m. Sunday.

Because of the heat warning, it is important to be extra precautious, meteorologist Stan Czyzyk said. “It may not be the best idea to go jogging outside around noon.”

Saturday is expected a high of 109 degrees and Sunday 107. Come Sunday the valley will see winds around 20 miles per hour and winds 15 mph on Monday, Czyzyk said.

Rain is not in the forecast for the next week, he said.

Many cooling stations have opened up due to the temperatures rising. Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army and the Shade Tree are now currently open as a daytime shelter for the homeless until September 30.

Valley residents can cool off at daytime cooling stations set up around the Las Vegas Valley. Walnut, Hollywood, Whitney Ranch, Cambridge, Black Mountain and downtown recreation centers will be open as daytime cooling stations from June 3 to June 5.
