Las Vegas expected to freeze overnight

Freezing temperatures are expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning in the Las Vegas Valley.

And the Southern Nevada Water Authority issued a warning to its water customers Wednesday about how to prevent property damage that such chilly weather can cause.

Wednesday's nighttime low temperatures will be at or below freezing in much of the Las Vegas Valley, according to the National Weather Service. Areas of the valley, such as Summerlin and near the Henderson airport, will be even colder, meteorologist Caleb Steele said.

The water authority advised customers to prepare for overnight freezing by insulating exposed pipes, valves, and plants and monitoring sprinklers and pool systems to avoid damage from the freezing temperatures.

Thursday's high will be in the high 40s and "flirting with 50," Steele said, and the low will be in the 30s. Parts of the valley higher in elevation will reach freezing temperatures overnight Thursday, but most of the valley will see lows between 33 and 37 degrees, according to the weather service.

Friday's temperatures will get back up to the mid-50s, which is more typical of this time of year, Steele said. Temperatures are expected to drop again early next week.
