Rain moves out of Las Vegas Valley; winter storm coming for mountains

After soaking much of the valley Thursday, rain will take a respite before returning Friday night and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Las Vegas Valley saw rain, ranging from one-third to a three-quarters of an inch, on Thursday, meteorologist John Salmen said. The rain wreaked havoc in the valley, with more than 112 car crashes by Thursday afternoon, flooding near the the Linq parking garage, and at least one swift-water rescue in the Flamingo wash area

While Friday should be dry most of the day, more rain is expected Friday night, Salmen said. The high will reach around 55 degrees and winds will blow about 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon.

Rain also is expected Saturday, and snow levels are expected to drop to about 4,000 feet, according to the weather service.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area could get a dusting of snow, but it is more likely that snow stays in the upper mountains, Salmen said. Between 12 and 18 inches of snow are expected at Mount Charleston.

A winter storm watch will be in effect for the Spring Mountains on Friday night and into Saturday morning, when most of the snow is expected, according to the weather service.

Conditions are expected to clear up by Christmas day, Salmen said.
