June 5, 2016 - 6:47 pm
Sunday’s high temperature soared to 109 degrees, breaking a record for the date set on June 5, 1996, according to the National Weather Service.
Triple-digit temperatures are expected for the upcoming week, the weather service said.
The high temperature of 109 degress Sunday broke the old record for the date of 108 degrees set in 1996 at McCarran International Airport. The excessive heat warning is set to expire Sunday at 8 p.m., meteorologist Stan Czyzyk said.
Temperatures throughout the week will stay 7 to 12 degrees above average, but won’t quite reach record-breaking highs.
Las Vegans can expect a high of 105 on Monday, 106 on Tuesday and 108 on Wednesday. Temperatures will take a dip near the end of the week, with a final 104 degree high on Thursday and high of 99 degrees Friday, Czyzyk said.
The weather service recommends residents wear sunscreen and lightweight, light-colored clothing, stay hydrated and avoid long, strenuous activity in the sun while the heat warning is in effect.
