Warm weather hanging around Las Vegas, but cooldown coming

Warm weather in the Las Vegas Valley is expected to peak Wednesday before cooling off for a couple of days, the National Weather Service said.

Tuesday's high reached 76 degrees, meteorologist John Salmen said. Wednesday's forecast high is 80 degrees, nearly 20 degrees higher than average.

A persistent high-pressure system is causing the unseasonably warm temperatures, Salmen said. However, a system moving through the valley Thursday is expected to send temperatures down, he said.

The weather service forecasts a 20 percent chance of showers overnight Wednesday in the valley, and a 10-degree drop in the high temperature Thursday, to about 70 degrees, said meteorologist Chris Outler.

The low-pressure system is expected to bring rain into the mountains and possibly light snow at higher elevations, Salmen said.

Temperatures are expected to rebound by the weekend. Highs of 73 and 75 degrees are forecast Saturday and Sunday, Salmen said.
