ROUNDUP: Stepna’s three hits power Arbor View to invitational championship

Nate Stepna was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI to help Arbor View’s baseball team to a 6-0 win over Layton (Utah) in the championship game of the Desert Hills Invitational on Saturday.

Earl Burge threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out five to get the win.

Adam Koutz went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases, and Kaid Urban was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Aggies.

Arbor View 13, Kearns (Utah) 0 — At St. George, Utah, Stepna went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, and Brandon LaPointe was 2-for-2 with two RBIs as the Aggies routed Kearns in five innings in the semifinals of the Desert Hills Invitational.

P.J. Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI, and Urban went 1-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs for Arbor View.

Evan McMahan tossed a four-hitter for the Aggies.

Foothill 8, Desert Oasis 5 — At Foothill, Tyler Van Stone went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and the Falcons used a five-run fifth inning to hand the Diamondbacks their first loss of the season.

Bligh Madris was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Ryan Moyes went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for Foothill, which had every starter get at least one hit.

Jordyn Compehos was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Alex Tafest and Bryson Stott each went 2-for-4 for Desert Oasis, which got a solo home run from Cody Schmidt.

Basic 6, Liberty 0 — At Liberty, Tyler Long tossed a seven-hitter, walking two and striking out five, to lift the Wolves over the Patriots in the Tom Coleman Classic.

Skyler Mahoney was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI, and Anthony Lee went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Basic. Hunter Robinson and Long each went 2-for-4 for the Wolves.

Rancho 6, Palo Verde 3 — At Palo Verde, Jose Verdugo and Kiefer McLendon each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Rams past the Panthers in the Tom Coleman Classic.

Josh Mill tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts for Rancho.

Kevin DeSoto was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs for Palo Verde.

Palo Verde 4, Centennial 1 — At Palo Verde, Bradley Lewis was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI to help the Panthers top the Bulldogs in the Tom Coleman Classic.

Brad Steiner tossed five shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out four, for Palo Verde.

Liberty 10, Durango 0 — At Liberty, Preston Pavlica smacked a grand slam over the left field fence in the second inning to power the Patriots over the Trailblazers in the Tom Coleman Classic.

Pavlica finished with five RBIs for Liberty, and teammate James Martz went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Chris Bradford tossed a one-hitter on the mound, striking out seven for the Patriots. 

Bishop Gorman 3, Faith Lutheran 1 — At Faith Lutheran, Jerrel Latham went 2-for-4 with a double, and Cole Krzmarzick was 1-for-3 with an RBI to help the Gaels nip the Crusaders.

Jack Little tossed a four-hitter for the Gaels.

Andrew Hudgins went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Faith Lutheran.

Silverado 8-2, Highland (Calif.) 0-3 — At Silverado, David Kuzma went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs to help the Skyhawks beat the Bulldogs in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Nick Kawano tossed six shutout innings, allowing six hits and no walks and striking out eight for Silverado.

In the nightcap, Cameron Garcia’s two-run single capped a three-run seventh as the Bulldogs rallied to earn the split.

Kuzma was 2-for-3 for Silverado in the second game.

Cedar (Utah) 8, Del Sol 0 — At Del Sol, Hunter Lowe was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs to help the Redmen blank the Dragons.

Angel Wallace was 1-for-2 for Del Sol.

Cedar (Utah) 21, Western 6 — At Western, Cedar had 19 hits and scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from the Warriors.

Javier Ruiz went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Western, which fell behind 8-0 after Cedar’s seven-run third inning.

Indian Spring 9, Lake Mead 3 — At Mountain View, the Thunderbirds scored five runs in the second inning to pull away from the Eagles in the Spring Slam.

Laughlin 14, Indian Springs 0 — At Mountain View, Jordan Shepard had a homerun and the Cougars scored five runs in both the first and third innings to top the Thunderbirds in the Spring Slam.

Liberty (Calif.) 21, Mountain View 2— At Mountain View, the Patriots struck for 10 runs in the first two innings to shut down the Saints in the Spring Slam.    

Pahrump Valley 7, Laughlin 3 — At Mountain View, A.J. Segura picked up the win on the mound as the Trojans used four runs in the fifth inning to tame the Cougars in the Spring Slam.  

Parowan (Utah) 10-14, Cheyenne 0-4 — At Cheyenne, the Rams swept a doubleheader from the Desert Shields.
