Boys basketball picture in a freeze-frame mode
February 12, 2010 - 5:54 pm
The playoff picture for boys basketball is on hold in some areas and finalized in others.
How's that for clarity?
As you may have seen elsewhere on this site, the Sunset Region tournament isn't set, and won't be set until at least Tuesday morning at the earliest.
Here’s an unofficial look at where things stand as of late, late, late Friday night.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association is expected to finalize seeds and pairings as soon as possible. Postseason play is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Before we begin, a quick look at the NIAA’s tiebreakers.
For a two-team tie, head-to-head record is first, followed by teams getting a point for each win by a beaten opponent. The team with more points wins. If they’re still tied the team that won the second meeting gets the nod (unless it results in a team being eliminated altogether, in which case, a play-in game is needed).
For a three-or-more-team tie, head-to-head remains first, then we go to point differential in head-to-head games. Hopefully we needn’t go any further.
SUNRISE REGION
Northeast League
Northeast League
Canyon Springs (14-0) clinched the No. 1 seed some time ago.
Valley (9-5) wrapped up the No. 2 seed on Friday.
Half of the Northeast League — Chaparral, Desert Pines, Rancho and Las Vegas — ended up in a tie for third at 7-7.
Chaparral won the tiebreaker on head-to-head record with a sweep of Rancho propelling the Cowboys into the third seed.
That sent the other three amigos back into a tie for fourth which Desert Pines won on point differential in head-to-head games, so Chaparral is the No. 3 and Desert Pines is the No. 4.
Southeast League
Foothill (13-1) locked up the No. 1 seed Thursday with Coronado (12-2) relegated to the No. 2.
Silverado (8-6) and Liberty (8-6) tied for third place.
The teams split, but Liberty won the tiebreaker because Liberty's beaten opponents won more games than Silverado's did. Liberty is the No. 3 seed and Silverado the No. 4.
SUNSET REGION
Northwest League
Northwest League
Palo Verde (15-1) is the No. 1 seed, followed by Cheyenne (13-3), Cimarron-Memorial (10-6) and Arbor View (9-7).
Southwest League
Gorman (16-0) wrapped up the league’s No. 1 seed. That much won't change.
The rest is in limbo. If it stands as is, surprising Desert Oasis (11-5) has clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round home game in the school’s second year. The Diamondbacks swept Durango (11-5) and won the tiebreaker.
Durango is the No. 3 seed.
Spring Valley (10-6) secured the four seed, pending the approval of a judge, by beating Pahrump Valley on Friday.
3A SOUTHERN
Virgin Valley (3-1 has clinched the No. 1 seed in the three-team tourney.
Moapa Valley (2-2) is the No. 2 seed and will face third-seeded Boulder City (1-3) in a semifinal.
2A SOUTHERN
Lincoln County (13-1) is the league’s top seed.
Agassi Prep (9-3) secured the No. 2 seed with a win on Friday. Needles (8-5) will be the No. 3 seed and The Meadows (8-6) the No. 4. Mountain View (8-6) was eliminated Friday.
Needles has one game remaining — and it's against Agassi Prep. Even if Agassi were to lose out, Needles still can't beat the Stars in a tiebreaker. Agassi gets the edge on beaten opponents' wins.
Needles could lose and fall into a three-way tie for third at 8-6, but wins the tiebreaker over The Meadows and Mountain View on point differential.
That would send Mountain View and The Meadows into a two-team tie for fourth place, which Meadows wins on beaten opponents' wins.
Even if Needles moves to 9-5, Mountain View and The Meadows would still tie for fourth and The Meadows still gets the edge.
1A SOUTHERN
Lake Mead (10-0) has clinched the top seed, followed by Beatty (9-1) and Pahranagat Valley (8-2).
Trinity (7-3) won at Round Mountain (5-5) on Friday and will play the fifth-seeded Knights again in the quarterfinals.
Round Mountain beat Spring Mountain to win their tiebreaker and force the Eagles into the sixth slot.
Henderson International (4-6) beat Sandy Valley on Friday to get the No. 7 seed.
Indian Springs (3-7) beat Tonopah (3-7) to win the tiebreaker for the No. 8 slot.
