ROUNDUP: Boyd’s 23 points spur Basic boys to Bulldog Invitational title

DeVonte Boyd racked up 23 points Saturday night to lead Basic’s boys basketball team to the championship of the Bulldog Invitational in Mesquite with a 58-51 win over host Virgin Valley.

Andrew Lopez added 11 points for the Wolves, who took a 31-22 halftime lead.

Nolan Tanner paced Virgin Valley with 17 points. Dee Bowler added 11 points, and Will Lara scored 10 for the Bulldogs, who made just 9 of 22 free throws.

Boyd earned tournament most valuable player honors, and Basic’s Jalen Rose, Virgin Valley’s Tanner, Desert Oasis’ Anthony Lianzo and Lowry’s Jesse Studebaker rounded out the all-tournament team.

Desert Oasis 61, Lowry 60 — At Mesquite, Alex Trillo’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the left corner lifted the Diamondbacks past the Buckaroos in the third-place game of the Bulldog Invitational.

Studebaker’s basket with eight seconds left gave Lowry a 60-58 lead, but the Diamondbacks came down the floor and found Trillo, who made his only field goal of the game.

Juliano Rosario scored 20 points for the Diamondbacks. Lianzo added 16 points, and Noah Jefferson scored 10.

Studebaker led Lowry with 21 points.

Basic 79, Lowry 71 — At Mesquite, Rose tallied 18 points, and Boyd and Chandler Lewis each scored 14 points to help the Wolves down the Buckaroos in a semifinal game in the Bulldog Invitational.

Lorenzo Lucero added 10 points for Basic.

Josh Watterson and Studebaker each had 19 points for the Buckaroos.

Virgin Valley 41, Desert Oasis 36 — At Mesquite, Tyson Teerlink netted eight of his 16 points in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs outscored the Diamondbacks 15-9 in the final eight minutes to collect a semifinal win in the Bulldog Invitational.

Tanner added seven points and eight rebounds for Virgin Valley.

Lianzo led Desert Oasis with 14 points.

Enterprise (Utah) 42, Moapa Valley 40 — At Mesquite, the Wolves escaped with a narrow win over the Pirates in a consolation game of the Bulldog Inivtational.

Sean McConnell led Moapa Valley with 10 points.

Enterprise (Utah) 55, Lincoln County 42 — At Mesquite, the Wolves outscored the Lynx 21-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away in the fifth-place game of the Bulldog Invitational.

Chandler Katschke led Lincoln County with 16 points.

Moapa Valley 71, White Pine 34 — At Mesquite, Shane Terril tallied 19 points, and the Pirates bounced back to rout the Bobcats in the seventh-place game of the Bulldog Invitational.

Jackson Mortsensen added 11 points for Moapa Valley, which led 40-18 at the half.

Lincoln County 69, White Pine 57 — At Mesquite, Katschke racked up 26 points, and the Lynx took advantage of a 32-17 scoring edge in the middle two quarters to top the Bobcats in a consolation game of the Bulldog Invitational.

Ryan Rippetoe added 23 points for Lincoln County.

Basha (Ariz.) 64, Arbor View 43 — At Yuma, Ariz., the Aggies put a huge scare into the top-ranked Division I team in Arizona for a little more than a half before the Bears pulled away in the title game of the Southwest Rotary Classic.

Blake Truman had 12 points and six rebounds for Arbor View, which led by eight early and took a 24-20 advantage into halftime.

But the Bears roared back, using a four-point possession at the end of the third quarter to secure an 11-point lead before cruising to the win.

Centennial 68, Westwood (Ariz.) 59 — At Yuma, Ariz., Marcus Allen tallied 17 of his 35 points during a 25-12 third-quarter spurt that propelled the Bulldogs past Westwood in the third-place game of the Southwest Rotary Classic.

Allen drained five 3-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds for Centennial, which trailed 33-32 at the half.

Malcolm Allen added 10 points and five assists, and Neiman Lee scored nine points for the Bulldogs.

Luke Tingey and Josh Brown scored 12 points apiece to lead the Warriors.

Cherry Creek (Colo.) 68, Green Valley 63 — At Green Valley, the Bruins rallied from a 31-26 halftime deficit and shook off the Gators’ game-tying field goal in the closing seconds of regulation to win in overtime.

Devan Kohn paced Green Valley with 23 points, and teammate Durrell McDonald scored 17.

Central (Calif.) 64, Mountain View 49 — At Yuma, Ariz., Central used a 20-10 second-quarter spurt to build a 33-20 halftime lead and hold off the Saints in a consolation game of the Southwest Rotary Classic.

Trevor Van Kempen scored 17 points, and Matthew Larson added 12 points for Mountain View.

Sandy Valley 59, Beaver Dam (Ariz.) 45 — At Sandy Valley, Ryan Hagan poured in 20 points, and the Sidewinders used a 19-6 second-quarter run to build a 31-18 halftime lead and cruise past Beaver Dam.

Daniel Soto and Randal Spencer added 12 points apiece for Sandy Valley.

Scottsdale Christian (Ariz.) 60, Lake Mead 48 — At Gilbert, Ariz., Scottsdale Christian took a 37-25 halftime lead and held off the Eagles in the seventh-place game of the Christian Cup.

Justin Yamzon led Lake Mead with 24 points. Wesley Brule added eight points, and Caleb Pitman scored seven points for the Eagles.

GIRLS

Spanish Springs 59, Faith Lutheran 27 — At Sparks, Lyndsey Anderson tallied 16 points, and the Cougars used a 28-6 third-quarter run to pull away from the Crusaders in the High Sierra Winter Classic.

Kelsey McCourt scored 16 points to lead the Crusaders, who trailed only 19-15 at the half.

Mountain View 62, Connelly (Calif.) 21 — At Anaheim, Calif., Briana Marruffo recorded 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists, and the Saints jumped to a 24-4 first-quarter lead en route to a win in the Fairmont Prep Tournament.

Caitlyn Martin added 19 points, and Kiley Murphy scored 16 for Mountain View, which got nine rebounds from Alley Cintron.
