ROUNDUP: Thornton’s last-second heroics help Gators boys fend off Del Sol

Mike Thornton drained three free throws with less than a second remaining in the third overtime Friday as Green Valley’s boys basketball team outlasted visiting Del Sol, 96-94.

Thornton, a sophomore who finished with 19 points, was fouled while in the act of shooting a 3-pointer as the Gators trailed, 94-93 in the final second.

“I can’t say enough about him,” Green Valley coach Lorenzo Jarvis said. “ For a sophomore to step up in that situation with everyone screaming, that’s just huge.”

Austin Tebbs made a 3-pointer at the end of the second overtime to keep the Gators alive.

Earl Thompson had 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals for Green Valley, which had four starters foul out.

Keiannte Wilkins added 16 points, Thomas Allison had 11 points, and Tebbs chipped in 10 points and five steals. Green Valley converted on 29-of-41 trips to the free-throw line.

David Day had 29 points for Del Sol, which made 33 of 50 free throws.

James Johnson added 16 points, and Fekadue Gebretekle and Chris Marshall each supplied 13 points for the Dragons.

Coronado 77, Tech 35 — At Coronado, Austin Nelson scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half, helping the Cougars grab a 42-13 halftime lead and blitz the Roadrunners.

Michael Louder added 14 points for Coronado.

Michael Johnson led Tech with eight points.

Silverado 62, Liberty 51 — At Silverado, Ruben Jackson scored 16 points, and David Ware added 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Skyhawks past the Patriots.

Michael El-Takrori had 11 points for Silverado.

Aaron Navitsky paced Liberty with 17 points, and teammate Jeremy Lagasca scored 16.

Foothill 62, Basic 42 — At Basic, Greg Cox had 19 points, and the Falcons used a 37-16 run during the middle two quarters to pull away from the Wolves.

Vince Carducci led Basic with 11 points.

Western 68, Desert Oasis 65 — At Western, Kentrell Washington scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors rallied past the Diamondbacks.

Sir Washington added 10 of his 16 points in the final quarter for Western.

Cameron Mich’l paced Desert Oasis with 34 points, and teammate Anthony Lianzo added 12 points.

Bonanza 75, Pahrump Valley 43 — At Bonanza, Matt Figgins logged 20 points and 10 rebounds to help the Bengals cruise past the Trojans.

Teyshawn Campbell added 13 points and seven steals for Bonanza, and teammate Robbie Sagel had nine points and nine rebounds.

Josh Schulz had 18 points to lead Pahrump, which struggled after falling behind 21-8 in the first quarter.

Spring Valley 43, Clark 34 — At Spring Valley, Deshawn Nowlin scored 13 points to help the Grizzlies past the Chargers.

Shannon Nolan added 10 points for Spring Valley, and teammate Gary Payton grabbed 10 rebounds.

Brian McGriff had 14 points to lead Clark.

Palo Verde 82, Arbor View 63 — At Palo Verde, Jordyn Martin had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lift the Panthers to a win over the Aggies.

Nahjee Matlock scored 18 points to help Palo Verde, which cruised to a 51-31 halftime lead.

Zach Hammond led Arbor View with 13 points.

Legacy 68, Cheyenne 61 — At Cheyenne, Zach Lane tallied 21 points as the Longhorns battled back from a 46-43 third-quarter deficit to down the Desert Shields.

Cardon Harris added 18 points, and Brandon Galindo scored 11 for Legacy.

Khalid Banks led Cheyenne with 20 points.

Cimarron-Memorial 67, Mojave 65 — At Mojave, Erik Brewer led four double-figure scorers with 19 points as the Spartans edged the Rattlers.

Christian Brown added 16 points for Cimarron, which got 12 points from Marques Barnes and 10 points from Deijon Spillers.

Andrew Lotts paced Mojave with 21 points. Demarge Boyd scored 12, and Quintarus Harper had 10 points for the Rattlers.

Faith Lutheran 66, Shadow Ridge 45 — James Hammer had 16 points, and the Crusaders used a 37-7 run in the middle of the game to defeat the Mustangs.

Greg Thomas added 10 points for Faith Lutheran.

Nick Flowers’ 19 points paced Shadow Ridge.

Virgin Valley 53, Moapa Valley 28 — At Overton, Cameron Jensen scored 19 points as the Bulldogs blasted the Pirates.

Brandon Cohen added 16 points for Virgin Valley, which led 26-13 at halftime.

Josh Thompson scored seven points for Moapa Valley, which was held to single-digit scoring in each quarter.

Mountain View 60, Laughlin 52 — At Mountain View, the Saints were 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Trevor Van Kempen was 4-for-4 from the line in the fourth quarter for Mountain View, which fell behind 13-0 to start the game.

Justyn Anderson led the Saints with 17 points, and Matthew Larson had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints. Freshman Keith Flowers scored all five of his points in the final minute of the game, including a key 3-pointer to stretch the lead to four points.

Daniel Marecki led Laughlin with 17 points. Andre Prosise added 13 points, and Kris Suhr scored 10 for the Cougars.

Needles 88, Agassi Prep 82 — At Needles, Calif., Michael Hills had 34 points, six rebounds and five assists to help the Mustangs outlast the Stars.

Aaron Burns tallied 32 points and six rebounds for Needles, and teammate Ryan Andrews had 13 points and nine rebounds.
Needles outscored Agassi Prep, 38-28 in the middle quarters.

Kalinn Jackson led the Stars with 22 points. Curtis Watson added 18 points for Agassi Prep, which got 11 points from Quincy Brown and 10 points from Terrell Kemp.

Lincoln County 86, The Meadows 72 — At The Meadows, Dantley Walker had 28 points, 16 assists and seven rebounds to lead the Lynx past the Mustangs.

Chandler Katschke added 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Ryan Rippetoe had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Lincoln County, which made 21 of 23 free throws.

Garrett Gosse had a game-high 35 points for The Meadows. Max Newman scored 15 for the Mustangs.

Pahranagat Valley 66, Indian Springs 38 — At Indian Springs, Cody Hosier scored 14 points to lead the Panthers to an easy victory over the Thunderbirds.

Dominic Morgando scored 24 points to lead Indian Springs, which was outscored 32-6 in the second quarter.

Spring Mountain 39, Tonopah 36 — At Saville Middle School, Devante Rash had nine points to lead a balanced Golden Eagles scoring effort in holding off the Muckers.

Cory Hansbrough and Jamar Smith added seven points apiece for Spring Mountain.

Tonopah’s Eddie Reynoso led all scorers with 17 points.

Beatty 67, Sandy Valley 36 — At Beatty, Ivan Maldonado poured in 22 points, and the Hornets raced to leads of 25-6 after one quarter and 46-13 at the half in a rout of the Sidewinders.

Ramiro Hernandez scored 11 points, and Ivan Hernandez added 10 points for Beatty.

Brandon Hughes led Sandy Valley with 14 points.
