SUNSET GIRLS: Gorman, Centennial cruise, earn another final showdown
Realign, switch leagues.
Apparently nothing will stop Nevada’s two most decorated girls basketball dance partners from another tango.
Bishop Gorman and Centennial will meet at 5 p.m. Friday at Durango for the third time this season and the 11th consecutive in a Sunset Region final.
After Centennial routed Cimarron-Memorial 69-24 in one semifinal Thursday, Gorman sprinted to a 30-5 lead and blitzed Desert Oasis 66-32 in the other.
“It’s always great games,” Bishop Gorman coach Sheryl Krmpotich said. “God willing, we do the things we’re supposed to do and play well.”
Centennial (25-4) has won the past two region titles. Gorman (19-8) swept the regular-season series from the Bulldogs, albeit by a total of four points.
“The first game we had a lot of poor shot selection,” Centennial coach Karen Weitz said. “The second game we had a lot of turnovers.”
Centennial was the only team to have much trouble Thursday, and even that didn’t last long.
The Bulldogs committed nine first-quarter turnovers before using a 38-0 run to bury Cimarron.
Tramina Jordan scored 14 points during the run and led Centennial with 25 points, including 6-for-8 3-point shooting.
Jada Brown added 14 points for Centennial, which will make its 14th straight regional final appearance. Emily Cox led Cimarron (13-15) with nine points.
Raychel Stanley had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and April Rivers scored 20 to lead Gorman past the Diamondbacks.
The Gaels rested Rivers and fellow senior guard Tonishia Childress for the entire fourth quarter after going up 62-26.
Sammi Tso had 12 points for Desert Oasis (16-12).
