Basic tops Chaparral in wild shootout

Basic football coach Jeff Cahill expected his team to have an explosive offense this season.

Through two games, the Wolves haven’t disappointed.

Host Basic produced points on eight of its first nine possessions and outlasted Chaparral 65-44 on Friday in a defensive coordinator’s nightmare of a game.

Quarterback Aaron McAllister threw for four touchdowns and added a rushing score for the ninth-ranked Wolves (2-0), who have produced 120 points in their two victories.

McAllister threw TD passes to DeShawn Eagles, Frank Harris and Jordan Gallegos in the second quarter, but injured his left, nonthrowing shoulder with 36 seconds remaining in the first half after taking a hard hit while trying to scramble up the middle.

McAllister returned for Basic’s first drive of the second half and led a seven-play, 65-yard drive that culminated with his 7-yard touchdown pass to Eagles that put Basic on top 49-20 with 8:26 left in the quarter. McAllister sat the rest of the game, and finished with 220 yards passing and 63 yards on the ground.

Chaparral (1-1) answered on its next drive, as Trayvius Hodge went in from 2 yards to cut the Wolves’ lead to 49-26 midway through the third quarter.

But on the ensuing kickoff, Harris broke three tackles and outraced several Chaparral defenders down the sideline for an 84-yard touchdown return that put Basic ahead 56-26 with 4:46 to go in the third.

Eagles had six catches for 89 yards and two scores, and Gallegos added five catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns, including a 1-yard pass from fullback Trace Evans on fourth-and-goal to cap Basic’s opening drive.

Harris added 59 yards and a touchdown on four catches to go with his spectacular kickoff return, and Quison Owens had a 95-yard interception return for a score in the first quarter for Basic.

Zack Grismanauskas replaced McAllister at quarterback for the final 20 minutes and rushed for 109 yards, highlighted by a 51-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter that gave the Wolves a 65-38 advantage.

The Wolves finished with 283 yards rushing and racked up 512 yards of total offense.

Cowboys quarterback Santiago Vialpando finished 25-for-41 for 344 yards and five touchdowns, including three to receiver Devin Gaddy, who had five catches for 66 yards.

Kentrell Petite led Chaparral with 12 receptions for 227 yards and two first-half touchdowns. Petite scored on a 79-yard catch and run on the Cowboys’ first play from scrimmage.
