Football games of the week — Week 2

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS GAME

Green Valley at Centennial — The Gators offense, which lost quarterback A.J. Amelburu, who decided to focus on baseball, and three of its top four wideouts. But brings back junior Christian Mayberry (33 receptions, 433 yards, four touchdowns).

The Gators also should have one of linebacking corps in Southern Nevada, returning the senior trio of C.J. Araujo (98 tackles), Chance Faitau (77 tackles) and Brock Hershberger (69 tackles).

Centennial is always one of the top teams in the Sunset Region, and will bring firepower of its own behind seniors Jamaal Evans and Savon Scarver.

GAMES OF THE WEEK

Liberty at Westlake (Texas) — Talk about a major test for Nevada.

The Patriots, who have won the last six Sunrise Region championships, travel to one of the country’s top meccas for high school football.

The 2016 squad is one of Liberty head coach Rich Muraco’s most talented teams in his eight years, so look for Liberty to compete and potentially grab one of the biggest wins in program history.

Chaparral at Basic — Both teams finished with their best seasons in recent memory last year in their respective divisions, but each also lost loads of talent on both sides of the ball.

The Cowboys made it to the Division I-A state semifinals before losing to Churchill County. Can Chaparral and coach Paul Nihipali muster up some of that magic again?

Basic fell to Liberty in the Sunrise Region final, and has finished as the region runner-up in each of the last two seasons.

Chaparral is expected to bring back its top receiver in Kentrell Petite (29 catches, 586 yards, six touchdowns). Basic is expected turn to Aaron McAllister at quarterback — the brother of last season’s quarterback, Aeneas.

Aaron McAllister was 38-for-69 passing for 555 yards and four touchdowns in limited duty last season for the Wolves.
