Gaels still king of Golden State
September 19, 2015 - 12:36 am
Bishop Gorman has defeated some of Southern California's top prep football teams in the past five years.
The Gaels added historic Long Beach Poly to their list of victims Friday.
Biaggio Ali Walsh ran for 211 yards and three touchdowns, and Gorman rolled to a 52-13 victory over the visiting Jackrabbits before a packed house at Fertitta Field.
Since the Gaels started playing a national schedule in 2010, they are 11-1 vs. teams from California — the only loss was to De La Salle in 2010 — and are 10-0 against SoCal schools in that time period. Gorman (4-0), ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today, hosts Servite (Calif.) next week.
Gorman overcame a rare off night throwing from junior quarterback Tate Martell, but were able to pull away from Poly (2-1) thanks to a running game that produced 374 yards.
Martell repeatedly punished Poly using the zone-read play and had 121 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. He finished 9-for-24 for 166 yards passing and two interceptions, though the Texas A&M commit did connect with tight end Brevin Jordan for an 11-yard touchdown to stake the Gaels to a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the first quarter.
Gorman led 10-7 in the second quarter until Ali Walsh capped a four-play, 53-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to put the Gaels up 17-7 with 6:36 left until halftime.
On Gorman's next possession, Ali Walsh broke free for a 72-yard run, and Martell scored from 1 yard out on the next play to give the Gaels a 24-7 lead at halftime.
Ali Walsh added two long scoring runs in the second half to put away the game. On a third-and-1 from the Poly 44-yard line, Ali Walsh spun off one tackler and outraced the Jackrabbits defense to the end zone for a 31-7 lead with 8:09 left in the third quarter.
Ali Walsh scampered 40 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, also on a third-and-1.
Gorman outgained Poly 607-304 on offense and was aided by 16 penalties for 171 yards by the Jackrabbits. The Gaels registered four sacks, including two by Tyjon Lindsey.
The game was delayed for several minutes late in the first quarter when Bishop Gorman senior Kekailoa Tyndall suffered a broken right leg while covering a kickoff.
Poly started Nolan McDonald at quarterback, but Florida State commit Malik Henry entered the game on the Jackrabbits' third series.
Henry, a consensus five-star prospect, played his junior season at Westlake (Calif.) and transferred to IMG Academy (Fla.) in January but left the school in June. He sat out the Jackrabbits' first two games but was cleared on Monday by the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section.
Henry made an immediate impact as he hit wide receiver Jackie Jones for a 64-yard touchdown on the second play after Henry entered the game to cut Gorman's lead to 10-7 with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter.
Henry added a 46-yard TD pass to Jones midway through the third quarter to bring Poly within 31-13. He finished 13-for-31 for 252 yards and two TDs, but the Jackrabbits' running game was shut down by Gorman and finished with 52 yards on 23 carries.
