Mountain View survives late scare from Calvary Chapel

Mountain View’s football team overcame a sloppy fourth quarter Saturday to hold on for a 32-26 win over Calvary Chapel at Henderson International.
The Saints (5-2, 3-1 Class 2A Southern League) had a pass intercepted and a punt blocked in the fourth, in which they were outscored 20-0 by the Lions (1-4, 1-3).
“I called it a moral defeat,” Mountain View coach Ray LeBoeuf said. “You win, but you feel like you lost. Getting outscored 20-0 in the fourth quarter, it’s unacceptable.”
Calvary Chapel pulled to within 32-26 on quarterback Cody Taylor’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1:54 remaining, but its ensuing onside kick was recovered by Mountain View.
“We just let things slip in that fourth quarter like we shouldn’t have,” said Mountain View quarterback T.J. Engel, who passed for 137 yards and two TDs. “We’ll pick it up next week and do all four quarters strong.”
Mountain View’s Cortland LeBoeuf carried 21 times for 168 yards and two TDs, scoring on runs of 59 and 3 yards. Karl Benjamin caught five passes for 78 yards and two scores.
Taylor threw for 113 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 37 yards and three scores to lead the Lions.
It’s the third loss this season by seven or fewer points for Calvary Chapel, which was coming off a 50-7 win at West Wendover.
“I was nervous coming into this game,” Ray LeBoeuf said. “(Calvary Chapel coach) Cliff Frazier is one of the best, if not the best, coaches in this league. I knew his kids would be ready to play.
“We were fortunate to have enough of a cushion when we collapsed in the fourth quarter.”
Taylor, who left the game with a leg injury late in the second quarter, returned late in the third. The junior scored on fourth-quarter runs of 5, 2 and 1 yards.
