Centennial’s Johonnot wins three events in loaded Las Vegas Track Classic

A typical basketball game might feature three or four coaches, 30 athletes and a half-full gymnasium of fans — on a good night.
Few high school sports events could be considered “festive;” the Las Vegas Track Classic, hosted by Del Sol high school, may be the exception.
“We have 63 schools here, including various unattached running clubs,” Del Sol head coach John Dixon said. “We have 1,298 athletes in all.”
Saturday’s events showcased varsity athletes who had to meet a certain qualification to compete. In others words, they had to be good.
Several Southern Nevada athletes were among the top showcases Saturday, including Karli Johonnot. The Centennial athlete won three events and earned top girls accolades, finishing first in the 100 hurdles in 15.41 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.39. She also cleared a mark of 5-foot-6 to take the high jump crown.
Western’s girls had three sprinters win races as Tierra Tyler took the 100 (12.27), Antoinette Garrett claimed the 200 (24.98), and Paradise Sanders captured the 400 in 57.84.
Liberty’s Joslyn Evans won the 3,000 in 11:19.70.
Faith Lutheran’s Rene Vogel cleared 10-3 to win the pole vault, and Legacy’s Avione Allgood easily won the discus with a throw of 139-7.
Chaparral’s Malcolm McMurray, who was named the top boys field event athlete in the meet, won the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 0¼ inches.
Also in the boys meet, Silverado’s Ladale Jackson took the 400 in 50.18 seconds. Canyon Springs’ Jovani Hernandez won the 800 in 1:57.03, and Centennial’s Nick Hartle was first in the 1,500 in 4:07.10.
Faith Lutheran had a pair of field event winners with Jack Leavitt clearing 13-6 to claim the pole vault title and Paul Morton winning the discus with a throw of 152-0.
Arbor View’s Jordan Miller won the shot put with an effort of 53-4.
Participants from New York, Colorado, and even Alberta, Canada make the event one of the most competitive invitationals Las Vegas athletes will see all year.
“The plan is to go to Arcadia and Mt. Sac [invitationals], so I’d like to see where they’re at,” Cheyenne head coach Scott Thrasher joked. “I don’t want to spend all that money for an out-of-state trip if they don’t put on a good showing here today.”
