Alarm glitch latest ‘Elvis’ headache

Elvis left the building, and so did a full house on New Year's Eve.

Who would blame the producers of "Viva Elvis" if they went home with temperatures rising, with apologies to The King's last Top 10 hit, "Burning Love."

Cirque du Soleil can't catch a break. A problematic fire alarm system in the Elvis theater at CityCenter's Aria forced Cirque to cancel a preview show Thursday and evacuate the 1,800-seat theater.

It was the latest headache for Cirque, which had rehearsal time for the show slashed because of construction delays.

Those delays, cast replacements and major rewrites forced Cirque to move the planned gala premiere from Jan. 8 (on what would have been Elvis Presley's ' 75th birthday) to Jan. 29, and eventually to Feb. 19.

MOEHRINGER HONORED

J.R. Moehringer, who collaborated with Andre Agassi on their best-seller "Open," landed on Deadspin.com's Top 10 list for Best Sportswriting of the Decade.

Moehringer made it for his article "23 Reasons Why a Profile of Pete Carroll Does Not Appear in This Space," in Los Angeles Magazine in 2007.

I'll be running a lengthy Q and A with Moehringer, a former colleague of mine at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver and author of the New York Times best-seller "A Tender Bar."

Some friends drive you to drink. In the Q and A, Moehringer suggests the opposite, that our carousing days sent him rushing headlong toward sobriety. The tipping point, I'm thinking, could have been the Running of the Pigs outside the bar owned by now-Denver mayor John Hickenlooper.
