Nevada Department of Education doles out $3.2 million in charter school grants

The Nevada Department of Education on Wednesday awarded nearly $3.2 million in federal grants to five existing and potential charter schools.

Celerity Schools of Nevada and Futuro Academy will receive $854,000 and approximately $822,000, respectively, for startup funding. Both have applied to participate in a new Achievement School District, which will hand control of up to six underperforming schools each year to a charter operator.

The education department awarded a second $854,000 startup grant to the American Leadership Academy, which plans to open in North Las Vegas next year. Sports Leadership and Management Academy of Nevada, launched by the pop star known as Pitbull, will receive a grant of nearly $504,000 for its new campus in Henderson.

Nevada State High School, with three Las Vegas Valley campuses, was selected for a grant valued at about $121,000 to share its best practices with other schools.
