Man arrested after standoff wanted in homicide of California woman

A California fugitive arrested in Las Vegas early Tuesday morning was identified by authorities.

William C. Gardner, 30, was booked at the Clark County jail on fugitive charges after a lengthy standoff Monday evening. Gardner was wanted on murder charges in the Nov. 18 shooting death of 32-year-old Leslie Pinkston in a car in downtown Winters, Calif., near Sacramento.

Gardner barricaded himself inside an apartment at the Camden Pointe Apartments, near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street, about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to Las Vegas police.

Officers with a fugitive task force spotted Gardner near the complex earlier that evening. But Gardner ran into a woman’s apartment and stayed there until about 1 a.m.

In addition to the woman, 24-year-old Brittany Ulmer, there was another man and a small child in the apartment with Gardner, police said.

The second man left the apartment first, police said.

SWAT negotiated Gardner for more than six hours before he peacefully surrendered. Police also had to negotiate with Ulmer to leave the apartment and arrested her on charges of obstructing an officer, police said.

It wasn’t immediately clear why Ulmer refused to leave the apartment, or if she was aiding Garnder in some way.

Police didn’t immediately say if Gardner was armed.
