Man indicted for sending Las Vegas mayor threatening letters
A 54-year-old man who once said he planned on shooting up Las Vegas City Hall was indicted on charges he sent threatening letters to Mayor Carolyn Goodman and an administrative law judge, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Alfred Blackwell faces two gross misdemeanor counts of intimidating a public officer for sending the letters in October. If convicted, he could face up to two years in jail.
Prosecutor Emily Montgomery said the threats arose over a workers compensation dispute.
State hearing appeals officer Georganne Bradley received one of the letters Oct. 8. In the letter, Blackwell, who says he was a Marine, disagreed with a decision Bradley made in his workers compensation case, police reports show.
“It is BULL (expletive),” Blackwell wrote, according to the reports.
Blackwell went on to say that on Oct. 21 “all Hell will break out and he will show his power,” the police reports said.
He signed the letter, “You will remember my name.”
Bradley told police it was the first time in her career she felt scared.
It’s wasn’t clear what the status of Blackwell’s case was late Wednesday, what his job was or where he worked.
Goodman received a similar letter the same day Bradley received Blackwell’s correspondence.
It’s unclear why Goodman was targeted. Blackwell did not work for the City of Las Vegas, a spokesman said.
In the obscenity-laced letter to Goodman, Blackwell didn’t say exactly what he wanted to do to the mayor, but that it would happen Oct. 21.
During their investigation, Las Vegas police spoke to Blackwell and showed them the letter that was sent to Goodman. “Yea- that’s my letter. I wrote that,” Blackwell told investigators, according to reports.
He was promptly arrested.
This isn’t the first time Blackwell has made a threat against the city. In June, he threatened to shoot up City Hall, the police reports said.
Goodman declined to comment, a city spokesman said.
Bradley did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Blackwell was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $10,000 bail. An arraignment hearing was set for Nov. 14.
