Nellis Air Force Base is getting new base commander

Nellis Air Force Base commander Col. Barry Cornish is leaving his post as the so-called “mayor of Nellis” for a new assignment at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, a Nellis spokesman said Thursday.

“He’ll be going to Hawaii at the end of this month,” said the spokesman, Sr. Airman Christopher Tam.

Cornish’s replacement is expected to be named next week, Tam said.

He said a change-of-command ceremony will be held on June 27.

Cornish has been stationed at Nellis since 2010 when he became vice commander of the 57th Wing.

He took over command of Nellis’ 99th Air Base Wing from Col. Steven D. Garland in July 2012.

Garland, now a brigadier general, is commander of the 36th Wing at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, according to his Air Force biography.

In his new assignment, Cornish will be the Pacific Air Forces executive officer at Hickam.
