12-year-old girl recounts bear mauling

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A 12-year-old girl who was mauled by a black bear in northern Michigan last week says she feared for her life during the attack.

Abby Wetherell tells The Associated Press she thought she was going to die as the animal clawed her on a dirt road near her grandfather’s hunting cabin in Wexford County.

But after attacking her twice, the bear went away. Abby was flown to a hospital in Traverse City, where 100 stitches were needed to close wounds on her left thigh and back.

She was released Sunday and is walking on crutches. She says she’s still in pain but expects to be fine.

State conservation officers shot a bear about 2 miles away Sunday and are doing tests but don’t know if it’s the same one.
