One person was killed after he lost control of his car and crashed into a home near the intersection of Sandhill Road and Wyoming Avenue early today.
A woman inside the home suffered minor injuries when the car bashed in the side of her bedroom wall, but her husband and young daughter who were in the room with her were not injured.
The crash occurred around 2:40 a.m. when the 17-year-old Las Vegas man lost control of a four-door sedan traveling east on Wyoming under U.S. Highway 95. The 2004 Nissan Maxima skidded through a block wall, rolled and came to rest in the back of a home at 1823 Dartmouth Court.
The Clark County coroner’s office identified the driver as Donald “Ross” Acker-White. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A male passenger, 22-year-old Brandon Rowley, was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was listed as in critical condition this afternoon.
Police believe Acker-White was driving at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a stop sign. Officials are unsure how he lost control of the vehicle. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have contributed to the accident.
An official for the Clark County School District said Acker-White was a student at Chaparral High School, but withdrew enrollment in December.
A female resident in the home was treated on site for injuries she suffered when debris hit her, Las Vegas police Lt. Tim Odpendyk said.
Luzmila Talavera said she, her husband and their 8-year-old daughter were asleep when the car crashed into the room. She suffered a cut to her upper lip from either a piece of rock or glass, she said.
“It was scary,” said Talavera, who speaks little English.
Another daughter, Aracely Talavera, said she was awakened by the sound of a blast and ran to her parents’ room.
“I was really scared,” she said. “It sounded like an explosion.”
The car ended up about 2 feet into the home.
Acker-White’s death was the 11th traffic-related fatality this year in the Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction.
