Pedestrian struck, killed while crossing street in Las Vegas

A woman died after she was struck by an SUV while jaywalking on a busy street in the southwest valley Saturday night.

The woman was trying to cross Decatur Boulevard between Twain Avenue and Supai Drive outside of a crosswalk

A 2000 Dodge Durango driving north in the right lane slammed on the brakes to try to avoid her, but the front of the Dodge hit the woman and threw her onto the roadway, Las Vegas police said.

Metro police were dispatched to the scene about 8 p.m.. Witnesses told them that a few cars had swerved to avoid her before she was hit, a Las Vegas police supervisor said.

Decatur was closed to traffic between Flamingo Road and Twain while fatal accident detectives investigated.

The woman was taken to University Medical Center, where she later died.

Two men in the Dodge were not injured. The driver of the Dodge was not suspected of driving under the influence, police said.

This is the 32nd fatal traffic incident in Metro’s jurisdiction for 2014, and the investigation is ongoing.
