Police: Man, 71, said he robbed Arizona banks to pay his bills

KINGMAN, Ariz. — A 71-year-old man who robbed three banks to pay his bills was arrested Tuesday.

Kingman police said Robert Wallace of Needles, Calif., confessed after robbing a Mohave State Bank branch just minutes earlier.

Wallace told police he had been unable to land a job and used the money from the first two robberies to cover bills and pay down debt.

Wallace admitted he robbed a Wells Fargo in Bullhead City on Nov. 14 and a Kingman Bank of America on Nov. 22 before Tuesday’s robbery, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Sochocki.

She said the Mohave State bank loot and a pistol were seized when a suspect vehicle was stopped. Wallace was arrested five minutes after the robbery.

Wallace admitted being armed during each of the lunch-hour robberies, but he did not display the weapon and fled with cash after handing tellers demand notes, Sochocki said.

Wallace was booked into jail on three armed robbery counts.
