Reported barricade leads to school lockdowns, apartment evacuations in Las Vegas Valley

The man suspected of having barricaded himself in a southeast Las Vegas apartment after a shooting Monday morning, was found not to have been in the apartment at all.

“Investigators think the suspect left the premises before police arrived,” said Las Vegas police officer Laura Meltzer.

Police arrived at the scene on the 3500 block Swenson Street, near Sierra Vista Drive, south of Desert Inn Road, about 10:30 a.m., after receiving a call about possible multiple gunshots. Witnesses told police they had seen the man enter the apartment unit, police said.

“We have to operate under the good faith of the people that report to us and have to conduct matters in a safe way,” Meltzer said. “Shots were fired so this is an armed subject and the information we had at the time indicated the person was in the unit.”

The shooting appeared to involve a domestic dispute, police said.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident.

Because of the reported barricade, schools in the immediate area were placed on lockdown and surrounding apartment units were evacuated as a precaution, police said.

Police lifted the lockdown at about 2:30 p.m. and schools were let out at normal times.

There were no reports of injuries in relation to the shooting.
