When Christopher LaPorte first approached Mayor Oscar Goodman about his plan for a video game arcade/bar downtown, the famously technophobic Goodman "had no idea what he was talking about," the mayor said at Insert Coin's ribbon-cutting Thursday.

He did remember one of his sons playing Pac-Man, and he told his son at the time not to waste time with it, to study and become a doctor instead. That's what happened, but the mayor wondered if he had sent his boy down the wrong path.

"He's working," Goodman said. "Mr. LaPorte is playing. He had the right idea."

In Lander County, for example, the school district owns some vacant land outside Battle Mountain, and for the past several years the small district has leased the property for exploration by a Canadian mining company.

Interim superintendent Steve Larsgaard said the school district has gotten enough revenue from the lease to fund a small scholarship for local high school students.

Larsgaard says he is hoping for an even bigger financial windfall, however: "If they find gold up there, we'll be sitting pretty."
