Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein touts her ‘green new deal’

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, speaking at a forum in Las Vegas on Friday, pitched what she calls a “green new deal.”

Stein compared her proposal to the New Deal used in response to the Great Depression. Her model would focus on putting the nation on a system that is 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2030.

This would create millions of jobs and it “makes the wars for oil obsolete,” said Stein, a physician. That would allow the U.S. to cut the military and put that money saved into jobs, she said.

“We don’t need to fight for oil anymore in the green economy of the future,” Stein said.

She added it would also save money on health problems that originate from fossil fuels.

“It’s just the win, win, win that we urgently need,” said Stein, who was the party’s nominee in 2012 as well.

Asked about her low standing in the polls, Stein said Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton have had much more free media than she has received.

Stein has faced difficulty getting on the ballot in Nevada. The secretary of state on Friday rejected an appeal for such access, concluding that the Nevada Green Party didn’t meet the 1 percent threshold of registered voters, as required under state law.

The Green Party works to improve the quality of the environment and people’s everyday lives.
