5 high school football games to watch this week

Here are some of this week’s most interesting high school football games.

Coronado (1-0) at Liberty (2-0) — The second-ranked Patriots have racked up 955 yards in their first two games, and outside of allowing three kick returns for touchdowns last week, also has been stellar defensively. Coronado is coming off a bye week, and the Cougars have given Liberty some tough games.

Las Vegas (1-0) at Legacy (0-1) — Fifth-ranked Las Vegas rolled past Rancho in the annual “Bone Game” last week, but should have a much tougher time this week against the Longhorns. Legacy, led by speedy running back DeMichael Walker, stayed with Utah power Desert Hills for much of the game last week.

Canyon Springs (1-0) at Arbor View (1-0) — Both teams started slowly but finished strong last week. The third-ranked Aggies trailed Silverado 7-6 at halftime before storming to a 35-7 win. No. 6 Canyon Springs fell behind early against Cheyenne before capturing a 28-13 win. A slow start for either team might not be so easy to overcome this week.

Faith Lutheran (1-1) at Clark (1-1) — It’s still early, but this could be a key game as the Division I-A schools begin league play. The winner will take an early step toward securing one of the Sunset League’s playoff berths.

Shadow Ridge (0-1) at Green Valley (1-1) — The ninth-ranked Gators opened the season with a strong win in California, but gave up the winning touchdown in the final minute last week against Palo Verde. Quarterback Christian Lopez hasn’t been as sharp as usual to open the season, completing just 45 percent of his passes. But the Gators have gotten big plays from Albert Lake, who has rushed for 303 yards on just 29 carries. Shadow Ridge showed some big-play ability last week, returning three kicks for touchdowns against Liberty, including two by De-Zhon Rogers.
