Arbor View line gives Norman room to run

Sophomore running back Larry Norman scored Arbor View's first three touchdowns of the season in the Aggies' opener against visiting Desert Oasis on Friday night.

Instead of being boastful, Norman sang the praises of his offensive line.

"There were no individuals out there," Norman said. "That's one thing coach (Dan) Barnson doesn't like is individuals. We worked really good as a team."

The No. 4-ranked Aggies operated like a well-oiled machine on offense, racking up 446 yards on the way to a 46-0 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Norman had touchdown runs of 12 and 35 yards, and hauled in a 20-yard TD reception in the first quarter to spark the Aggies to a 22-0 halftime lead.

Norman had 78 yards on nine carries and was one of three Arbor View running backs to rush for more than 75 yards.

"We have really good running backs and really good blockers," he said. "So this season we are going to be running a lot."

Herman Grey had six carries for 90 yards, with a 66-yard TD to open the second half, and Salah Boyce had 86 yards on eight carries, with a 1-yard score.

Barnson credited Elijah George, Thomas Newton and Steven Davis as anchors on Arbor View's powerful line that cleared the way for 403 rushing yards.

"(Norman) did great. He saw the holes and did exactly what he was trained to do," Barnson said. "But the key was those seven guys up front. They had push all night."

On the other side of the ball, most of those same linemen disrupted the Diamondbacks offense, limiting Desert Oasis to 16 total yards. Rasheed Parks and Jacob Speaks each had a sack, and C.J. Smith made an interception.

"If you control the line of scrimmage, you cause fits all night long, and we did," Barnson said.

■ Durango 54, Bonanza 7 - At Bonanza, Marcus Sanders-Williams compiled 127 yards on seven carries, including touchdowns of 5, 26 and 75 yards, to power the No. 9 Trailblazers past the Bengals.

Arie McQuaig Jr. rushed for 124 yards and two TDs for Durango (1-0, 1-0 Northwest). The Trailblazers rolled up a 374-139 yardage edge on Bonanza (0-1, 0-1).

Brett Neighbors returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a Durango score, and Gene Germain returned a fumble 59 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Bonanza's Brett Doyle threw a 40-yard TD pass to Colton Bennion on the game's final play, and all 119 of his passing yards were to Bennion.

■ Cheyenne 26, Cimarron-Memorial 19 - At Cimarron, Myloe Lewis scored on a dazzling 85-yard screen play and two runs, and the Desert Shields (2-0) held on to beat the Spartans (0-1) in the "Duel in the Desert."

Lewis took a short pass from Demetrius Jones, weaved through the Cimarron defense and down the left sideline for a first-quarter touchdown. He ran for a 21-yard score in the second quarter and a 27-yarder in the third, and finished with 111 yards on 24 carries.

Cheyenne took a 26-7 lead with 10:50 to play on Daiquan Slater's 3-yard run.

Senior running back Justin Davis (121 yards, 25 carries) fueled a Cimarron comeback, running for two late touchdowns, and the Spartans recovered an onside kick with just over two minutes to play. They advanced to the Cheyenne 21 before a sack and interception ended the threat.

■ Sierra Vista 45, Sunrise Mountain 6 - At Sierra Vista, Deyon McKinney rushed for 147 yards and passed for 95 as the Mountain Lions (1-1) compiled a 448-86 yardage edge over the Miners (1-1).

Sierra Vista took a 22-0 first-quarter lead on TD runs by McKinney and Maliek Broady and a 20-yard fumble return by Javen Nihipali.

Broady ran for a 58-yard TD in the third quarter and finished with 146 yards, and Tim Jenkins caught an 11-yard TD pass from McKinney.

Sunrise Mountain's Darryl Colvin intercepted McKinney and returned it 25 yards for a second-quarter TD. Sherman Nash gained 44 yards on 11 carries.

■ Shadow Ridge 58, Western 6 - At Shadow Ridge, quarterback Bakari Smith had a hand in five touchdowns and 340 yards of offense, leading the Mustangs (1-1) over Warriors (0-2).

After falling behind, Shadow Ridge scored 58 unanswered points and held Western to 12 yards on the ground.

Smith ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns, including a 66-yarder, and was 8-for-11 passing for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Wise had two TD receptions.

For Western, Larry Jennings passed for 186 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown to Mark Guerrero.

■ Laughlin 16, The Meadows 6 - At The Meadows, Averie Prosise rushed for 120 yards and broke open a scoreless game with fourth-quarter touchdowns of 10 and 61 yards, carrying the Cougars (1-0, 1-0 Division III Southern) past the Mustangs (0-2, 0-1).

After Prosise's 10-yard TD and 2-point conversion run gave the Cougars the lead, The Meadows answered with Jacob Gleason hitting Ian Holbrook for a 16-yard scoring strike.

Only 53 seconds later, Prosise ran untouched 61 yards up the middle of the field for another touchdown.

Gleason was 12 of 18 for 124 yards and a touchdown. Holbrook made six receptions for 64 yards.

Laughlin rushed for 264 yards, including Christian Avery's 75 on seven carries.

■ Mojave 29, Desert Pines 18 - At Mojave, the Rattlers (1-1) scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to overcome an 18-7 deficit and beat the Jaguars (0-2).

Quarterback Zack Avare passed for 125 yards, including a 65-yard strike to Ty Flanagan with 6:52 remaining. Avare also scored on a 2-yard keeper to put the game away.

Desert Pines' Iquan Corsey scored on runs of 7 and 2 yards in the first quarter. In the fourth quarter, Malik Davis returned a field-goal attempt by Mojave 100 yards for Desert Pines.

■ Calvary Chapel 21, Agassi Prep 12 - At Calvary Chapel, with his team clinging to a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, Riley Clark led a 13-play drive, capped by his 7-yard TD run, to help the Lions (1-1, 1-0 Division III Southern) defeat the Stars (0-1, 0-1).

A.J. Davis added a 36-yard TD run in the first quarter, and Clark threw a 51-yard scoring pass to Chris Basilio.

Clark also made an interception.

■ Boulder City 41, Faith Lutheran 22 - At Boulder City, Xavier Steel rushed for 267 yards and four TDs on 10 carries as the Eagles (2-0) beat the Crusaders (1-1).

Boulder City rushed for 457 yards, with Steel's touchdowns going for 70, 19, 80 and 80.

Greg Benson threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns for Faith Lutheran.

■ Moapa Valley 66, Clark 0 - At Overton, Jared Repp rushed for 87 yards and three touchdowns on five carries and returned a blocked punt 18 yards for a score as the Pirates (2-1) crushed the Chargers (0-2).

Repp scored on runs of 24, 17 and 38 yards to help Moapa Valley build a 45-0 halftime lead. Sean McConnell caught two passes for 55 yards, including a 32-yard TD from Lance Hilton. Hilton completed 4 of 5 passes for 77 yards.

Jake Repp ran for a 23-yard TD for the Pirates, and Justin Hughes rushed for 58 yards, including a 43-yard TD.

■ Hurricane (Utah) 43, Legacy 34 - At Hurricane, Utah, the Tigers (3-0) pulled away from a 15-15 halftime tie to beat Legacy in its season opener.

Charles Julian rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries for the Longhorns. DaMonte Bolden added 53 yards and two scores on 10 carries for Legacy, which had 367 rushing yards.

LaMarus Williams also ran for a Legacy touchdown, and quarterback Kashawn Richardson hooked up with Randy Ricks on a 72-yard scoring pass.

■ Virgin Valley 41, Pahrump Valley 8 - At Mesquite, Garrett Leavitt completed 11 of 17 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs (2-0) routed the Trojans (0-2).

Virgin Valley's Dillon Graves caught seven passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, Tyson Teerlink made four catches for 68 yards and a TD, and Dee Bowler ran for 126 yards and two TDs.
