Carp again named Nevada Sportswriter of the Year

For the second consecutive year and fourth time overall, Steve Carp of the Review-Journal has been selected as Nevada Sportswriter of the Year for 2008 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Carp, 52, has worked at the Review-Journal since 1999 and has been in Las Vegas since 1988, when he worked at the Las Vegas Sun. He primarily covers boxing and also serves as the paper's NBA, golf and tennis writer.

Carp also was selected Nevada's top sportswriter in 2000, 2004 and 2007. He has won 34 writing awards and is the author of a book on the history of UNLV basketball. Carp serves as first vice president of the United States Basketball Writers Association and will become president of that organization at the Final Four in April.

Las Vegas 51s announcer Russ Langer, 48, was named Nevada Sportscaster of the Year for his fifth annual honor by the NSSA. He won Nevada honors in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and was New Mexico Sportscaster of the Year in 1999.

Jim Nantz of CBS was selected as national Sportscaster of the Year, and Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe was national Sportswriter of the Year.

The awards ceremony is May 4 in Salisbury, N.C.
